Posted WCS finals page on Reddit. Feedback was generally positive but only marginally helpful. Overall not a lot of comments. Roughly 215 new users, 30 concurrent. Big spike from previous traffic but still a lot of untapped potential. To put things in perspective, the Starcraft subreddit has about 150k subscribers and 2k average active readers on average.
Thoughts:
- For video, people like it big. While fullscreen is always an option, this essentially renders the rest of the content of the page moot if we force our users to do so. When this happens, our page just becomes a heavier version of a normal stream page. This gives people very little reason to stay. Ideally, the video should be nearly screen size with a small amount of space for the live feed and other content that would want to be tracked by the user.
- The page is still too busy. While some people like as much information as possible, it is becoming clear that the greater majority prefers simplicity with option complexity. After all, in the case of a live event, people usually come to see the video.
- Chat needs to be incorporated in some way, at least as an option. People want to know other people are saying.
- Having a dialog to prevent accidentally leaving the page would ease user frustration.
- Found a bug in the submission pipeline for moderators. Params being passed in URI instead of data portion of POST request, limiting the length of submissions.
- Found a bug with like/dislike counters, possibly because of selectors.
The next event is the LCS Summer Series. It starts on Wednesday, June 12th at 4:00pm EST. More info on lolesports.com. Not a lot of time for a very high profile event. Planning to post to League of Legends reddit, which has about 300k subscribers and 12k average active readers.
Existing features:
- Video stream (make bigger)
- Twitter feed (with some level of user configuration, perhaps?)
- Reddit feed
- Polls (remove main panel or tidy it up)
- Prediction game (longer term predictions - not game by game - so better as a tab than a panel)
- Articles
Target new features:
- Better visualization for past items. A timeline/slideshow, perhaps?
- An enhanced like/dislike system. Incentivize doing so either with score or knowledge how it will be useful.
- Introduction/assistance tooltips. Need to guide the user and clarify features.
More thoughts later.
